BJC HEALTH SYSTEM (MISSOURI)

BJC is the largest healthcare system in Missouri. In 2003, BSC provided consulting to BJC's Planning, Design, and Construction (PD&C) group.

The PD&C group believed that its overall service delivery was satisfactory but it did not have measures to demonstrate success or gauge improvements.

As with many multi-campus healthcare organizations, department processes were informal and tended to vary across campuses.

PD&C sought to create consistency in order to optimize efficiency.
Process Improvements Increase Productivity

BSC:

  • Established service delivery metrics to clarify department priorities and align employee behaviors.

  • Established methods to implement metrics that energized the organization for success.

  • Integrated existing project management software to support newly established project planning and scope-control processes. For example, BSC developed tools to streamline the project cost estimating process and improve estimate accuracy.

  • Obtained staff input at each step of the process. Several work groups contributed to re-engineering processes. Change advocates and trainers are BJC staff members.

  • Realigned the group's structure to support the department focus on process efficiency.

  • Accelerated performance improvement while executing a formidable workload.
